H is for Hibiscus

It’s ABC Wednesday again, and lucky me, one of my Hibiscus is blooming…

This is my favorite of the three Hibiscus in the garden; but after a little Googling, I’m drooling over the Roselle Hibiscus sabdariffa

The Roselle does it all – it flowers, provides fruit, and is thick enough to use as a hedge!  I’d love to eventually have an entirely edible landscape; the Roselle is on my list!  Its common name is the Florida cranberry because the fruit is tart.  I like tart, and there are plenty of recipes available online for syrups, juices, teas, jellies, and even WINE!

  1. Wine from a hibiscus? A wine garden. There’s an idea.

  2. I’ve seen references to such wine, but can’t say that I’ve ever tasted it. If it tastes as good as the flower looks. it’ll be grand.

  3. I love hibiscus flowers. They are beautiful. I can’t grow them living in Middle Missouri so I have to go to MEXICO to see them in their full glory! Thanks for reminding me….where is the number for the travel agent….. :-)

  4. I am so glad to find someone who appreciates that particular color. Orange is so dramatic in the garden, especially with good pairings. Often people say they don’t like orange and I don’t know why. I can’t grow Hibiscus, but I can grow orange dahlias.

  5. I wish I could grow any color dahlias; I love them! I’ve just never had any luck. And I completely agree about the orange. I might not wear it, but it looks great in a garden – like you said, very dramatic.
