{this moment} One Wheel Away from Amish

Soulemama, {this moment} needs words.  Without them, years from now, I could forget what’s missing in this photograph – me on my bike.  This is the third week of blogging my biking experiences, and since I live in Sarasota, to leave out the Amish would be remiss.  We live in Southgate but are close to Pinecraft, a mixed Amish and Mennonite neighborhood where matching clothing and a slower pace are the norm.

Drive Bahia Vista Street between Tuttle Avenue and McIntosh Road.  You’ll pass by two Amish restaurants, three markets, an ice cream shop, and Everence Federal Credit Union, formerly named Mennonite Financial.  There’s even a teeny-tiny Amish-run post office.  And I’m not sure what goes on at the corner of Bahia Vista and Tuttle, but there are two dozen plus tricycles gathered there at times.  Although a few are equipped with small motors, wheels don’t exceed three in this neighborhood.

So I fit in really well…well, not really and that’s what’s missing from this photo.  I was riding home from the doctor’s office this morning and pulled up to the corner of Bahia Vista and Beneva next to three young Amish girls wearing matching blue maxi dresses and white lace caps.  I smiled; they smiled back.  As we waited, three more girls dressed in similar clothing pulled up–two on tricycles, one on a bicycle.  The girls greeted each other, and for the first time in my Florida life thus far, I felt out of place wearing shorts and a T-shirt.

As my bright yellow bike rolled over the crosswalk in between the two sets of girls–behind the riders and in front of the walkers–I wished that the car sitting at the light would snap that picture.  It would have been a good one.  Instead I grabbed my cell phone and took a photo from my place in the line.

Birding by Bike

A list is starting to compile, but one of the everyday things I notice more by bike than by car are the birds.  Even with a car I’ve had to halt for ibis on my street because there’s often a flock crossing from one yard to another.  But by bike, they’re everywhere – black birds and mockingbirds anyway.  Woodpeckers too, but hearing them is more common than seeing them.  Cardinals frequent the trees that line Shade Avenue by Sarasota high school.  And every once in a while, an egret or heron wanders a little too far from shore.  This week, I pinpointed the lucky yard the blue jays call home…well, maybe not so lucky.  Blue jays are notoriously aggressive.  Lucky for me, they were feeling nice enough this week to allow for a few pictures.

School Avenue Recreational Trail

I’ve passed this sign and trail-head off Weber Street a hundred times by car always wondering where it led, yet it never entered my mind as I pedaled my bike parallel down Shade Avenue to the post office on Siesta Drive last week.  It was only a lack of good sign posts in front of the plaza that led me to the back parking lot to lock up my bike around a parking sign.  After mailing my package, I couldn’t resist taking the long, quiet back alley exit.  Always trying to avoid traffic, at the very least, it would bring me back out to Siesta Drive past the busy entrance to the Southgate mall.  Instead, the alley led me straight to the other end of the School Avenue recreational trail.

What a find!  I traded the smell of exhaust for Jasmine and the sound of car horns for woodpeckers.  The trail crosses over a few streets, but they’re residential and quiet.  There are street lights and benches along the way.  It’s the perfect short-cut.  I’ve used it twice since.

The trail starts on the South side of Weber Street between U.S. 41 and Shade Avenue and ends on Siesta Drive.

Biking Sarasota

It may be forced, but I’m one of those people now.  As the saga of the station wagon continues, I’m on my fourth month with only two wheels.  When the engine initially blew, I pined to my sister how I so much wanted to be one of those people who on Saturday mornings would jump out of bed and onto my bike to ride to the farmer’s market, neck stretched to the sky breathing in the morning air.

No, that’s not exactly me.  For the first week or so, John ended up driving me and my bike around.  I’d have him drop us off at the office in the morning only to call him at quitting time and beg for a ride home.  He’s John, so he happily and silently obliges regardless of how ridiculous my requests may be.

The arrangement then turned into me dropping him off at work.  For a while, we tried switching out during the day.  I had mornings; he had afternoons.  We even borrowed a limo.  But now finally after four months, all the alternatives to fresh air and exercise have gone.  It’s down to me and Mellow Yellow.

A 30th birthday gift from John, Mellow Yellow is the Bentley of bikes.  That combined with the Chamber of Commerce weather of late leaves me nothing to complain about…although I sometimes have to remind myself of that fact when my thighs start feeling like boiled spaghetti.  But even that’s starting to make me smile.  The constant burn has me imagining my upper body attached to Rockette legs.  The only real downside is that my $20 farmer’s market budget may have to be lowered.

So I bought more than my shoulder bag could handle, I got to the market before the lines for Maggie’s Seafood and Worden’s Farm were stretching from Main to State Street.  There were still farm-fresh eggs left, and after also riding my bike to the bank and the office, my vegetable drawer was filled by 10 a.m.  OMG, I’m one of those people!!!

To help stay one of those people, I’m starting a new series of blog posts – The Places Having No Car Will Take You – and I’m going to share my experiences biking Sarasota.  In one week, I found a new rec trail and park, spotted a snake and vultures, and had a squirrel run into my front tire.  Fun, gross, strange, there will definitely be lots to blog about.

Roses in Bloom

Don Juan Rose

Tis the season for roses.  Mine are blooming and so are Mable’s.  My sister stopped by the Ringling Museum last week and said the rose garden is in full bloom.  We live in South Florida, so roses bloom year-round, but Spring brings them all at once.  If you’re in the Sarasota/Bradenton area, take a stroll through.  With 1,200 rose bushes planted in a circular maze, Mable’s garden is something to see and smell.  Plus the museum offers free admission on Mondays. :)

Blue Moon Rose

Highs and Lows

The low of my day was when my brand new DELL DELL DELL DELL DELL computer kept entering power save mode as I typed.  Can you tell I’m mad at Dell?  I want to make sure that comes across.

But on to my high…the formerly hormonal teenager from last week said it looked like I had a long day, so he rode his bike to the gas station and came back with this…

…for me!  Awwwwwww.  And here’s an update from my last post SWAT Team in Southgate in high/low format: today’s high for the Sarasota police is that they caught the robber this morning.  The low is that he was in the very spot the SWAT team had staked out for eight hours on Friday – his house.  It took three days and a SWAT team to find a 52 year-old suspect who’s last arrest was in 1978.  I suddenly feel better about my low.

Christmas in Sarasota

Lights…

Family…Action…

Sarasota Boat Parade of Lights

We had all seen the parade before but never from the water.  It was front-row, and it was fun.  We tied up in a line of boats along the parade’s route at Marina Jack. There was dancing…There was boat-hopping…And there were lots of lights… I don’t know who won the contest; although you can find out at Marina Jack restaurant.  The trophy will be on display for the next year.  But the birthday boy’s pick for the winner was this 1957 Chevy.

Happy Birthday, John!

John’s birthday was yesterday, but since we love him so much, the celebration is being extended to include the whole weekend.  That being said, it didn’t have the most glamorous start.  They both start with a “g” but a garage sale is anything but glamorous.  Unless, you spend some of your earnings on lobster. And one was free!  Lotsa Lobster is just South of the Sarasota Square Mall, and they’ll give you a free lobster on your birthday…but sorry, kiddies, you have to be 18 to indulge.  You also have to spend $10, which is no problem considering their selection of fresh scallops, clams and fish. With our bellies full of lobster and drawn butter practically seeping from our skin, we floated off to the Sarasota Boat Parade of Lights.  The weather was perfect and the sun was setting as we made our way over to Marina Jack.

Sidebar for the house Katherine Harris is building.  The word on the street is that it’s a house for entertaining not living.  There’s supposedly multiple fireplaces and a large ballroom surrounded by balconies.

Now back to the joys of nature not inheritance…I haven’t sorted through my pictures of the boat parade yet.  To be continued…

Groupons!

Do you know what a Groupon is?  I didn’t get the concept at first, but now that I do, I’m hooked.  They’re coupons for absolutely anything and everything, and they’re awesome.  The deals are sold in large quantities or groups: group + coupon = Groupon.  My sister got me a spa Groupon for my birthday.  I gifted an Old Navy Groupon to my niece for back-to-school.  And now there are get-away Groupons!  But the real reason I’m talking about them is that there are a few things-to-do-in-Sarasota Groupons happening right now:

This one I’ve done and highly recommend: Half Off the Sarasota Medieval Fair  It’s not held on the Ringling grounds anymore, but let’s face it, we were spoiled.  The raucous fun that comes with hurling tomatoes and gnawing on over-sized turkey legs should have never taken place in such a pristine locale.  It’s at the Sarasota Fairgrounds this year November 12-13 and 19-20.

This one I’ve never even heard of, so please leave a comment if you get in on the Groupon and do this.  51% Off Sarasota Gondola Ride from Phillippi Creek Oyster Bar.

Remember these are Groupons; the deals will expire within the next day…but there will be more.  Follow me on Twitter to get the updates – @LettuceShare.
